Recent discoveries within the 32,952 hectare Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary have revealed a network of Inca highways leading to the sacred city of Machupicchu. On this little-known alternative hike we follow the Sacred Urubamba River through tropical forest alive with birds and orchids, maintaining an altitude of between 2,000 to 2,650 mts/6,600-8,700ft.) and avoiding the high passes of the more traditional Inca Trail, making this the less strenuous option for modern-day pilgrims to Machu Picchu.
