HL- 04 NEW INCA TRAIL TO MACHUPICCHU
(5 Days / 4 Nights)

Recent discoveries within the 32,952 hectare Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary have revealed a network of Inca highways leading to the sacred city of Machupicchu. On this little-known alternative hike we follow the Sacred Urubamba River through tropical forest alive with birds and orchids, maintaining an altitude of between 2,000 to 2,650 mts/6,600-8,700ft.) and avoiding the high passes of the more traditional Inca Trail, making this the less strenuous option for modern-day pilgrims to Machu Picchu.

ITINERARY
 DAY 1: Cusco – Km 82 – Machu Q’ente

Early morning bus ride to the start of our hike at Km 82 from where we follow an easy path along the Urubamba River towards the first archaeological site Llaqtapata (2,650m/8,750ft). After lunch we follow a path through eucalyptus forest to our first camp at the river shore below the Incan Ruins of Machu Q’ente (2,550m/8,500ft).

 DAY 2: Machu Q’ente – Km 96

After a delicious breakfast we follow the Urubamba stream walking through different ecological levels: From arid fields to lush cloud forest vegetation. We can observe torrent ducks, parrots and hummingbirds. In the afternoon we get to our second camp at the base camp of the National Cultural Institute at Km 96. Again on the river shore, in a mild climate we’ll enjoy dinner (2,400m/8,000ft).

 DAY 3: Km 96 – Chachabamba

We continue still along the Urubamba River, which hundreds of kilometers further along its course enter the Amazon. During our walk we have a couple of gentle slopes to ascend as the surrounding vegetation becomes lusher. We can observe an incredible variety of orchids and endemic fauna. We get early to our camp at the archaeological site of Chachabamba, where we can enjoy a semi-tropical climate. Afternoon free to visit the site or refresh in the stream and we finish the day with a last, exquisite dinner in nature.

 DAY 4: Chachabamba – Machupicchu

From the archaeological site of Chachabamba (2,250m/7,500ft) we start the approximately 3 hours climb up to the archaeological group of Wiñaywayna (2,650m/8,750ft), considered one of the most beautiful ones in the area due to its location and architecture. We visit this magnificent site and enjoy lunch in fantastic surroundings before we continue our hike through high cloud forest with its lush vegetation to the famous Sun Gate or Intipuncu. From here we can enjoy the first and best panoramic views of the Lost City of the Incas: legendary Machupicchu (2,400mts/8,000ft). A short walk brings us down to the entrance from where we continue by bus to the village of Aguas Calientes. Here we can choose to relax in the natural hot springs and stay overnight in a comfortable hotel.

 DAY 5: Machupicchu – Cusco

After an early breakfast we take the first bus up to Machupicchu to enjoy sunrise in this magical place before tourists arrive from Cusco. We enjoy this enigmatic place in a guided tour and have enough free time available to explore the site by ourselves or do some hikes before we descend to Aguas Calientes in the afternoon. Train ride back to Cusco, transfer to the hotel and overnight.
